Water-soluble CBD powder is what makes cannabinoid beverages, drink mixes and many modern gummies practical to produce. Standard CBD isolate and distillate are oils. Drop them into water and they float, cling to the container walls and separate on the shelf. A water-soluble powder carries the cannabinoid in a matrix that disperses in water, so it can be weighed, blended and dissolved like any other dry ingredient. This guide explains how water-soluble CBD powder works, how to choose one and how to do the dosing math for beverages, gummies and capsules.
How water-soluble cannabinoid powders work
Water-soluble powders are made by breaking the cannabinoid oil into very small droplets and surrounding them with food-grade carriers and emulsifiers. The emulsion is then dried into a free-flowing powder. When the powder meets water, the droplets disperse through the liquid instead of pooling on the surface. The smaller and more uniform the droplets, the more stable the dispersion, which is why “nano” is a common term in this category.
Our PhytoNano water-soluble powders are made in-house with our proprietary PhytoNano process at up to 40% potency. The range includes:
- Full spectrum water-soluble CBD powder
- Broad spectrum water-soluble CBD powder
- Water-soluble CBG powder
- Water-soluble CBC powder
- Water-soluble THCV powder

Potency
Potency is the percentage of cannabinoid by weight. Higher potency means fewer grams per serving, which lowers your shipping weight and leaves more room in the formula for flavors and actives. Always formulate from the potency on the lot’s COA.
Dispersion and clarity
Test the powder in your actual base. A good powder disperses quickly with ordinary mixing and stays dispersed. Clarity varies with the base: some beverages stay clear, while others turn slightly hazy. Run a bench test before you commit to a production lot.
Flavor impact
Carriers and the cannabinoid itself can add taste. Isolate-based and broad spectrum powders tend to be more neutral. Full spectrum powders carry more natural plant character, which some brands want and others mask with flavor systems.
Stability and shelf life
Ask about shelf life of the powder and run stability checks of your finished product. Our PhytoNano powders carry a 3-year shelf life when stored sealed, cool and away from light.
Documentation
As with any raw material, insist on a lot-specific COA. Every Palmyra Phytotech lot can be checked on our COA lookup, and our COA reading guide explains each section.
Dosing math for water-soluble powder
The core formula:
grams of powder per serving = mg cannabinoid per serving ÷ (potency × 1,000)
At 40% potency, each gram of powder carries 400 mg of cannabinoid.
| Target per serving | Powder per serving (40%) | Powder for 10,000 servings |
|---|---|---|
| 10 mg | 0.025 g (25 mg) | 250 g |
| 25 mg | 0.0625 g (62.5 mg) | 625 g |
| 50 mg | 0.125 g (125 mg) | 1.25 kg |
These figures are for formulation planning only. Add a manufacturing overage based on your own process validation, and verify finished-product potency by testing.
Formulating beverages
For ready-to-drink beverages, batch math works from the total volume:
- Decide the cannabinoid per container, for example 20 mg per 12 oz can.
- Multiply by the number of containers in the batch: 20 mg × 5,000 cans = 100,000 mg (100 g) of cannabinoid.
- Divide by potency: 100 g ÷ 0.40 = 250 g of 40% powder.
- Pre-disperse the powder in a portion of the batch water with good agitation, then add it to the main tank.
Practical tips: add the powder before carbonation, check compatibility with acids and preservatives in a bench trial, and confirm the cannabinoid stays dispersed through your full shelf-life window. Container material can also matter, so test in your final packaging.
Formulating drink mixes and stick packs
Water-soluble powder is ideal for dry formats. Blend it with sugars, sweeteners, electrolytes or flavor powders. Because the cannabinoid is a small share of the total fill weight, use geometric dilution (mix with a small amount of the blend first, then progressively more) to get uniform distribution. Check blend uniformity with samples from the beginning, middle and end of the run.
Formulating gummies
Water-soluble powder can go into the water phase of a gummy formula, which avoids the oil handling that isolate or distillate requires and helps the cannabinoid distribute evenly through the batch. Calculate per-gummy amounts with the same formula, then multiply by gummies per batch. If you would rather not develop the formula yourself, our Gummy Builder lets you design a custom gummy and order 250 finished bottles or a 1,000-gummy R&D run.
Formulating capsules
For powder-fill capsules, water-soluble powder blends well with common excipients. Calculate fill weight from your target milligrams and the powder’s potency, and confirm that the total fill fits your capsule size.
Water-soluble powder vs isolate: when to choose which
Choose water-soluble powder whenever water is the base or the product is a dry mix. Choose CBD isolate or a distillate for oil-based products such as tinctures, softgels and topicals. Our raw material comparison guide covers the full decision.
Custom water-soluble formulations
Beyond cannabinoids, we convert other oil-soluble ingredients into water-soluble powders. See custom water-soluble powders to request a quote. For finished supplements, our sister company Palmyra Nutra offers manufacturing services.
Bench testing a new water-soluble powder
Before committing to a production lot, run a structured bench test in your own formula. A simple protocol:
- Prepare three small batches at your target dose: one in plain water, one in your full beverage base and one at double dose to stress the system.
- Mix as you will in production, using similar agitation and order of addition.
- Observe immediately and after 24 hours, 1 week and 4 weeks for haze, sediment, surface ring or separation.
- Taste each sample against a control without cannabinoid to judge flavor impact.
- Store samples in your final container at room temperature and in the refrigerator.
- Send a finished sample for potency testing to confirm the cannabinoid stays in the product at the expected level.
Record everything. The same protocol lets you compare suppliers fairly and requalify future lots quickly.
Troubleshooting common issues
- Ring at the neck of the bottle: often a sign the emulsion is not fully dispersed or interacts with an ingredient. Increase mixing time, pre-disperse in a smaller volume of water first, or review the base for incompatible ingredients.
- Haze in a clear beverage: some haze is normal in certain bases. Test a lower dose, adjust the base or position the drink as naturally cloudy.
- Clumping in dry mixes: powders can pick up moisture. Keep containers sealed, control humidity in the blending room and blend with a flow aid if your formula allows.
- Uneven potency between units: improve blend uniformity with geometric dilution and longer mixing, and sample from several points in the batch.
- Off flavor: try a broad spectrum or single-cannabinoid powder for a more neutral taste, or adjust the flavor system.
Handling and storage
Store water-soluble powder sealed in its original packaging, cool, dry and away from direct light. Reseal opened containers quickly. Label any repacked portions with the original lot number, and use older lots first.
Frequently asked questions
How does water-soluble CBD powder work?
The cannabinoid oil is broken into very small droplets, coated with food-grade carriers and dried into a powder that disperses in water.
How much 40% water-soluble powder do I need per serving?
Divide the mg per serving by 400. For example, 25 mg of CBD needs 62.5 mg of 40% powder.
Can water-soluble CBD powder be used in gummies?
Yes. It goes into the water phase of the gummy formula, which helps it distribute evenly through the batch.
What is the shelf life of PhytoNano powder?
PhytoNano water-soluble powders carry a 3-year shelf life when stored sealed, cool and away from light.
Which water-soluble powders does Palmyra Phytotech make?
Full and broad spectrum CBD, CBG, CBC and THCV, made in-house at up to 40% potency.
